Robert is a long time enthusiast of electronics, 3D printing, tinkering, all things automotive, and getting enjoyment out of making things perform functions they weren’t originally intended to!

What kind of Maker are you?

I love to take anything eletrical or mechanical apart and see how it works and if it can be improved, it’s often a challenge to wait for a warranty period to be up (it often isn’t) before I tear into things, it’s an amazing feeling being able to remove, edit or add functionality to an existing product, or to repurpose electronics that would otherwise be thrown out.

How old were you when you first got involved in the Maker community?

Last year actually! it’s through last years MakerFaire that I got involved in STEM outreach work with Vic Uni which gives me an opportunity to give back and help others, how cool is that!

Why did you get into Making? Did anyone introduce you to your area of expertise?

I’ve always been interested in how things work and not just accepting the fact that they _do_ work, for me it’s as much of a learning experience as it is for enjoyment. I was introduced into microquads and model RC by a close friend and it’s just grown from there!

What inspires you when you are working on a project?

Being able to make something that is explicitly designed to solve a problem versus buying something that’s close enough, having full control over something in an ever increasing IOT and subscription server dependent ecosystem (and not wanting to pay a subscription when I don’t have to).

What advice would you give to young people who want to get involved?

Just get stuck into it, ask a ton of questions, you will break things and make mistakes and that’s part of the fun! Find something that interests you, if it’s too large of a project or problem to solve start breaking it down into smaller easier to solve chunks.  A lot of things that you’ll create will draw on learnings from other projects.

Tell us about a Maker that inspires you.

Adam Savage, he’s been an animator, designer, as well as a model maker for some epic films and seems like a genuine down to earth person who wants to encourage others and share his knowledge.
