Modeling with matchsticks is a time consuming but extremely rewarding hobby for any age. Having recently retired, Howard can now really roll his sleeves up and focus on his main goal – to model the significant Wellington buildings in a city that he loves.

What kind of Maker are you?

Love creating models of Wellington’s heritage buildings – recently retired with time to focus more on developing more models from ‘scratch’

How old were you when you first got involved in the Maker community?

I have been working on my models for the last 5 years – this is my first involvement at Maker Faire

Why did you get into Making? Did anyone introduce you to your area of expertise?

I’m a born and bred Wellington who loves the city, love being creative and enjoy the challenge of working on original projects

What inspires you when you are working on a project?

I love the challenge, keen to see the finished project and love sharing them with others.  Pinterest inspires me – the size of some projects using match sticks is absolutely mind blowing!

What advice would you give to young people who want to get involved?

Start with a small project.  There are models in kit sets – but just encourage young people to get popsicle sticks and just create!!!
