A relatively new and late convert to Cosplay, but described as a 12 year old with a credit card – uses a combination of purchasing and making to complete his Cosplays.

What kind of Maker are you?

I’m a very amateur Cosplay costume maker, some bits I buy and others I make by sewing or making from foam

How old were you when you first got involved in the Maker community?

I’m in my late 40’s and have only really been making Cosplay costumes for the last year or two, inspired by local and international cosplayers I saw and met at the Armageddon Expo’s over the years

Why did you get into Making? Did anyone introduce you to your area of expertise?

Probably the people most responsible for introducing me to Cosplay making techniques are Sanit Klamchanuan who introduced me to Matt Reading (Wellington Ironman) who are also be attending the Makers Faire with his droids.  Matt helped me make my fist costume from scratch, so it’s all his fault!

What inspires you when you are working on a project?

I guess I really enjoy the feeling of wearing a costume and interacting with the public, particularly at charity fundraisers or community events, inspiration for the costumes themselves comes mostly from movies and TV – Dredd, Star Wars, Marvel and others.

What advice would you give to young people who want to get involved?

I wish I’d discovered Cosplay when I was younger, that way I’d have more time to practice the techniques to build better costumes, plus I wouldn’t be quite as fat and aging!  Give it a go, the community is very supportive and there are loads of helpful videos on Youtube, plus free templates can be found with a little help from Google!
