What kind of Maker are you?

I mostly like to make things out of stuff I find. I guess recycling is a big thing with me- I don’t like to see things go to waste when they can be used for something or fixed etc.

Why did you get into Making? Did anyone introduce you to your area of expertise?

I have always made things from when I was a kid- craft was much more of a thing to do with kids back then I think. As well as enjoying making things, back then stuff wasn’t so cheap or available, so making things was the way to go if you wanted something. (This included weaponry and explosives at one stage I’m sorry to say) I also got into leatherwork and later building guitar amps etc. Taking things apart and seeing how they worked was always a fascination. I don’t really see myself as having a particular area of expertise but have picked up things form various people and places. Trial and error is probably my biggest teacher.

What inspires you when you are working on a project?

With the junk monsters, I am thinking of the music a bit- what sort of sound are they going to make for the ensemble. So that is a main consideration before I begin. I was a marine biologist by trade at one stage, so the myriad of fascinating forms of life is also an inspiration (no strange or alien creature that has ever been created for movies is as bizarre as some of the actual lifeforms out there). I generally don’t ever have a clear idea of the exact finished form of my creations, but am dictated somewhat by the materials I find and use.

What advice would you give to young people who want to get involved?

Wanting it enough is all it takes really- you just need to have a go and be prepared to accept things not working out all the time but to keep going regardless.
